Very good 1865 cover from LISKAARD (Cornwall) to CANNES.

Franked with SG81 4d bright red (with hairlines).

Recipient is Lieutenant Colonel Lygon Somers Cocks on a grand tour of France after hanging up his spurs.

Grandson of Cornish politician and art collector Reginald Pole-Carew (Joshua Reynolds was his pal and painted his portrait shown below).

A career soldier, Cocks rose from teenage ensign in the Norfolk infantry to lieutenant colonel, and served in Crimea…

… but he is better now remembered as a keen amateur photographer and for commissioning famous architect George Gilbert Scott to build him a country pile, Treverbyn Vean, in St Neots Cornwall. Now regarded as one of his finest Gothic Revival buildings. Took many snaps of Gibraltar one of which shown below.

His brother Thomas Somers Cocks was part of the C*nterbury Group that colonised Christchurch. Mount Somers in NZ is named after him.
