Compte de Melfort
Very fine 1820 outer wrapper sent EDINBURGH to PARIS via LONDON to Le Compte de Melfort, aka Louis Pierre François Malcolm Drummond.
As the name and address suggest he was from a Scottish Jacobite clan and was born in exile. His great grandfather John Drummond fled to France with King James after the failed rebellion.
He himself avoided certain death during the French Revolution by escaping during storming of the royal residence the Tuilieres Palace in 1792.
He later served as an officer under Napoleon and achieved rank of colonel in the Neopolitan Army.
