The book concerns an extraordinary discovery of early Great Britain stamps and postal stationery. In 1899 quantities of early stamps and postal stationery were reportedly discovered at the Dublin and Edinburgh post offices possibly also in London. The material included. 1840 Penny Blacks and Twopenny Blues. 1840 VR Officials. 1840 Mulready envelopes and wrappers. Early proofs and specimens. Large multiples and virtually complete sheets. Embossed issues of 1847?1848. The circumstances surrounding the disposal of the material were particularly interesting. Senior Post Office officials arranged for stamps to be sold through employees rather than openly acknowledging that the Post Office was selling them. Don Madden investigates the historical background while Karl Louis attempts to reconstruct the original sheets and trace individual stamps and multiples through subsequent sales.
