Very fine 1864 entire - US Civil War era Transatlantic commercial letter - sent LONDON to NEW YORK to ARCHER & BULL on the SS SCOTIA.
Built in Glasgow and launched in 1862, the Cunard vessel the Scotia was the last of the side paddle steamers ever built. It also held the Blue Riband for the FASTEST westbound transatlantic crossing between 1863 and 1869 - 8 days and 3 hours - set in December 1863. Remained in service for Cunard until 1876 mainly operating out of Liverpool. Was then converted into a cable laying ship laying telegraph cables under Atlantic. And finally met her end when wrecked off Guam in 1904. Incredible longevity for an iconic vessel.
The voyage carrying this letter took twice as long to give some context.
Fantastic markings on this cover showing London tombstone and NY packet routing mark and 19 cents paid on arrival.
