1907 New Caledonia / Communards
Agonised about this one but can’t keep everything so…
1907 New Caledonia to Bohemia. Rare combo. Gaston Mourot the sender is a stamp nut - writing to a fellow philatelist in Prague to ask for some stamps.
Gaston’s parents were prisoners and exiles - Communards! And he was the product of a ‘union libre’ born in exile. His dad was quite a famous agitator and journalist Eugene Mourot.
Poignantly the card depicts the prison colony in which they were detained prior to amnesty in the 1880s.
And.. there is an Australian twist. Gaston married his missus Rebecca in Sydney in 1914. She was a NSW gal. They saw out their days there.
Had this valued at £65-100 by a couple of folk more knowledgeable than I. I am offering at just under that range.
