Ceylon medical pioneer

Very fine 1873 entire LONDON to WORCESTER (Massachussetts). SG143 3d rose plate 11. Containing a fine and interesting seven page letter forwarded from Colombo. Ceylon.

To ‘Mrs Dr S Green’. This will be the wife of Dr Samuel Fisk Green, who is regarded as the pioneer of western medicine in Ceylon and was founder of the island’s first hospital in Manipay, now known as the Green Memorial Hospital, which was also responsible for training around 60 local doctors (see picture).

His wife had moved back to Worcester from Ceylon with their children. Letter appears to be from one of his colleagues or a family friend.

The Greens were a famous medical family from Worcester spanning several generations.
