1856 entire GATESHEAD to MARSEILLE franked with scarcer SG64 4d carmine rose MEDIUM GARTER.

Sent from GEORGE & CM PALMER ‘coal fitters and shipping brokers’. George was a former whaling boat captain turned ship owner, and his son Charles Mark Palmer would later go on to found the shipbuilding concern Palmer Bros & Co which kickstarted the shipbuilding tradition in Jarrow.

Neat trio of French transit/receiver markings on back.

Bottom right corner of stamp damaged otherwise sound. CV for SG64 on cover is £1000.
