1841 letter from Hightown / Liversedge, Yorkshire to ‘Pennsylvania, North America’ (that’s the address!). No postal markings at all so carried by hand - hopefully by someone who knew where it was meant to go!

From Anne Fairburn to her brother Thomas Lawford. Fabulous contents. He is clearly a recent emigre to Pennsylvania - likely a Quaker (based on style of letter, and address of sender) She is wanting to know why he’s not written. She had heard rumours of passengers on his crossing dying of the pox and being thrown overboard. But has now been told they were untrue. She wants to know about life in America and whether there are prospects for her and her husband to follow.

Some tears along folds but still a great item.

And wonderfully easy to read.
