1836 entire from CLARENDON, JAMAICA to LONDON. Sent from James Miller, plantation manager at the Lucky Valley estate to the plantation owner, Henry Lawes Long with an update on the estate. Quite easy to read but transcript also provided.
Long was the grandson of EDWARD LONG, English judge, historian and plantation owner who wrote the notorious and influential HISTORY OF JAMAICA, which served as a manifesto for slavery and made the case for the racial supremacy of the colonisers in the 18th century.
This letter, sent post abolition, refers to former slaves as ‘apprentices’.
Great condition and a fascinating item.
